Purpose
This conference is designed to present current topics of interest to Low Risk Neonatal and Maternal Nurses.
Objectives
1. Identify common newborn/pediatric problems that need referrals to neurosurgery.
2. Understand differential diagnosis associated for common signs and symptoms.
3. Review normal growth and development relating to neurosurgical concerns.
4. Become familiar with diagnoses associated with “oddly-shaped heads” in newborn infants.
5. Distinguish between craniosynostosis and the more common entity deformational (positional) plagiocephaly.
6. Obtain knowledge of pediatrician evaluation, management, testing alternatives.
7. Verbalize familiarity with diagnosis associated with “dimples” and “tails”.
8. Discuss the Colorado historical connection of Advanced Practice Nurses.
9. Discuss the future of the NNP role and its impact on Low Risk Neonatal Nurses.
10. State five supportive hospital maternity practices found to significantly extend breastfeeding duration among mothers of healthy, term infants.
11. Identify effective strategies to implement breastfeeding-friendly maternity practices.
12. Educate and prepare expectant mothers and their families for an optimum hospital breastfeeding experience.
13. Review the physiologic processes associated with gestational diabetes.
14. Understand maternal and fetal implications associated with gestational diabetes.
15. Understand fetal circulation.
16. Identify three causes of PPHN.
